History of Fudan University:

Fudan Public School established in 1905. The name of the school was chosen from the “Biography of Yuxia” The University consists of two Chinese characters Fu (return) and Dan (Dawn) and its literally meaning is “heavenly light shines (day after day) these words are used in the lines of “Auspicious clouds are splendid, they gather and fill the sky, Brilliant and high level are the sunshine and moonlight, again the morning glory after the night”. During the Xinhai Revolution in 1911 the college was used as the headquarters of the Gguangfu Army and in this duration the college was closed for almost one year.

This school in 1917 converted in to the private university and named as the Private Fudan University and it had a middle school and university-preparatory school. In the year of 1929 Fudan University regulated its departments and it expended to include the Journalism Department subject, Law Department and Education Department, Municipals Department. The total 17 departments assigned for the Arts, Science, Law and Business. In 1937 after the Japanese Invasion of China, this university shifted with the Kuomintang government to the inland city of the Beibei Chongqing. An agricultural college was added in this university in 1941. The first meeting of the 5 th Conference of the Highest Executive Authority on 25 th December 1941, of the National Government of Republic China was held and in this meeting has voted to change the Fudan University Chongqing to the public university. After this conference Fudan University then became National Fudan University. After the
end of the World War II it again shifted back to the Shanghai.

Two Fast Rises of the University:

In June 1949the Shanghai Military Control Commission holds the control of Fudan University. In February 1952, the Committee of the Fudan University of the Chinese Communist party was founded. The East China region carried out a vast restructuring of the universities in August and September 1952. The Fudan University became the nation’s best and key school in the Social Science, Humanities and natural sciences. Yang Xiguan hold the secretary of the Fudan University Conference of the CCP in 1954. The university held the first National Representative Conference of the CCP in 1956. The university’s quality and conditions of education progressed or developed considerably accomplishing a distinguished plateau in the field of study.

In 1958 the university initiated new majors and the establishment of these majors marked the university’s path towards a Socialistic comprehensive school. Fudan University in 1959 was listed as one of the 16 key universities in the country. The university from 1966 until 1976 fell victim to the Cultural Revolution, because heavy casualties were inflicted on teaching and research. On 27 April 2000, Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University were merged.

University has established a campus formation that called one body two wings  the body consisted Handan and Jiangwan campuses that are just 2 miles (3.2km) apart, and the two wings are the Fenglin and Zhangjiang campuses.

Library:

In 1922 the university library was officially was established the library previously known as the Reading room. At present this library comprises:

The collection of library has very wide range of books and academic sources. Almost 4.4588 million copies and articles have in the collection of the library at the end of 2004. This huge collection contains books, journals, bound volume of the newspapers and the recordings of audio-visual. The library has thread bound books of Chinese classics that includes the rare copies of 7,000, during the reign of the Republic China 100,000 books are published, and almost 1.392 million are foreign books, moreover library has 32,000 Chinese and foreign journals and periodicals. It is notable that to enlarge the collection of the library every year 100,000 new books will be added.

In the present time the library has been undergoing great changes in the structure of the resource, it tries to emphasis excellent types of resources. The library give the services as it open for whole week and it provides or serves more than 7,000 readers who visiting the library daily. Not only it facilitates its students only presently but also it provides the online services for their students 24 hours a day.
The Fudan University Library’s integrated computer management system has been advanced or upgraded many times. The library added the more facilities and enhances its services as it gives the services like:

Undergraduate program:

Graduate program:

On 6 November 1984 the Graduate School of Fudan University was established, on 25 January 1985 the Graduate School of Shanghai Medical University was established. Both graduate schools were merged to be a new Graduate School of Fudan University in April 2000. The graduate school is responsible for the whole planning of the management.

International Students:

The international students mix programs consists of both the degree programs and non-degree programs. The university also offers the high quality educational programs for their international students. The university has the foreign students staff for the helping and guiding international students and the office management is responsible for all the issues or affairs that is related to the international students. The university has established a program of Bachelor of Arts and this program is called the “Chinese language for International students”.
